Gracie Mikan, a dedicated junior with a passion for political journalism, is our "Widefield of Dreams" student of the month. This summer, she embarked on an incredible journey to Washington D.C., where she attended the prestigious Washington Journalism and Media Conference.

Mikan has always had a keen interest in politics and writing. Her journey began in elementary school, where she started writing for the school newspaper. In ninth grade, she joined the Speech and Debate team, an experience that has profoundly shaped her. Initially introverted, she realized the power of her voice and that her perspective was valuable and sought after.

Mikan's involvement with Speech and Debate has taken her to two national conferences, including the World's School Debate and Congressional Debate. These experiences ignited her love for political journalism even more, providing a platform to hone her skills and engage with complex political topics. During her week-long conference in D.C., she had the unique opportunity to meet with congressional correspondents and journalists, listen to influential speakers, and visit the national press club. She was able to network with professionals and gain invaluable insight into the field.

What truly drives Mikan is her desire to make a genuine impact. She recognizes that politics can be difficult to navigate and feels she has the ability to help others understand it. Mikan's dream is to be a senate correspondent and eventually run for senate herself.
